Cherry blossoms in bloom at Gardens by the Bay

Cherry blossoms in bloom at Gardens by the Bay

Those who are unable to fly north to view the cherry blossoms when spring arrives can now view them closer to home at Gardens by the Bay's new floral display, "Blossom Beats".

According to a press release from Gardens by the Bay on Monday (Mar 14), more then half of the cherry blossoms - or sakura - have started to bloom in the "experimental floral display". Blooming is expected to continue over the next one to two weeks, they said.

From now until around Mar 27, more than 20 varieties of cherry blossoms will be on show at the Flower Dome, which opens from 9am to 9pm daily.

The types of cherry blossoms include the Prunus Fujishidare which has pendulous branches, the Prunus Yedoenis Yoshino which stands out with its striking white flowers, and the Prunus Accolade, with its pale pink blooms.

Also in bloom at Gardens by the Bay are peach blossoms, including the Prunus Genpei Shidare which has flowers of two different colours – red and white – growing on the same plant.

Styled after a traditional Japanese garden, the "Blossom Beats" display will feature quintessential Japanese elements such as a tori gate, Japanese screens and kimono.

“Gardens by the Bay is a horticulture-themed attraction that delights its visitors with flowers not commonly seen in Singapore. With this in mind, we decided to bring in a variety of cherry and peach blossoms,” said Mr Felix Loh, Chief Operating Officer of Gardens by the Bay.

“Coupled with the Japanese-styled landscape, we hope ‘Blossom Beats’ will give visitors a truly unique and memorable experience,” he added.

Changi Airport voted world’s best airport for fourth straight year

Changi Airport has been voted the World’s Best Airport for the fourth year in a row, according to an annual global survey of air travellers.

This is the seventh time in 16 years that the airport has picked up the title at the World Airport Awards. The airport was also awarded Best Airport for Leisure Amenities.

The awards are based on a Skytrax survey of 13.25 million travellers across 106 nationalities, and included 550 airports worldwide.

Coming in second place was South Korea’s Incheon International Airport, followed by Munich Airport and Tokyo International Airport (Haneda). In fifth place was the Hong Kong International Airport, followed by Chubu Centrair Nagoya and Zurich Airport. London’s Heathrow Airport, Kansai International Airport and Hamad International Airport took the eighth, ninth and 10th spots, respectively.

"To be voted by customers as the world's best airport four years in succession is a most remarkable achievement for Changi Airport Singapore, and is clear testament to the airport's popularity amongst air travellers,” said Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted.

Changi Airport Group CEO Lee Seow Hiang said: "We do not take this recognition for granted; it is the extraordinary effort and commitment of the entire airport community that drives Changi’s success. We thank our passengers and partners alike for their continued support and confidence in us."
