Red Dot Design Museum to relocate to Marina Bay

Red Dot Design Museum Singapore to relocate to Marina Bay

The Red Dot Design Museum will move to a new location in Marina Bay in the last quarter of 2017.

The Red Dot Design Museum Singapore will relocate to Marina Bay towards the end of 2017, the museum said in a press release on Tuesday (Jun 20).

The museum said its lease of the Red Dot Traffic building ceased at the end of April this year and that it would relocate to the Marina Bay City Gallery at 11 Marina Boulevard in the last quarter of this year.

The premise at Marina Bay is currently undergoing a six-month period of refurbishment, the museum told Channel NewsAsia.

The new museum will feature several galleries that will play host to exhibitions of award-winning designs. It will also collaborate with partners to host design-related exhibitions and expand its Market of Artists and Designers (MAAD) marketplace, which will be organised at Marina Bay.

The museum said it had welcomed about 645,800 visitors and hosted 688 events over the last 12 years since it opened in 2005 at the current location.

The iconic Red Dot Traffic building at 28 Maxwell Road used to house the former Singapore Traffic Police Headquarters and has conservation status. Earlier this year the Ministry of Law announced it would be taken over by the ministry in May as part of the expansion of the adjacent Maxwell Chambers. Its distinctive red colour will also be restored to the original off-white.

Gardens by the Bay is turning five this year, and will celebrate with a line-up of activities including a multimedia show called the Gardens Extravaganza Special. A full-dress rehearsal for the show took place on Monday night (May 29).

The Supertree Grove will be the stage for the show, which will only be presented on Jun 3 and 4. It will feature dancers, aerial performers, video mapping and special effects "on a scale that visitors have never seen before", organisers said.

On the same weekend, a roving parade, dance party and light installations will take place. For the rest of June, Gardens by the Bay will put up a fifth anniversary edition of its sound and light show Garden Rhapsody as well.

In addition, Gardens by the Bay's Flower Dome will be home to Blue Beauties, a floral display showcasing blue flowers such as hydrangeas and delphiniums, for its fifth anniversary celebrations.

"This year marks a milestone for Gardens by the Bay, as it celebrates five years since its beginnings as a bold idea to build a national garden on reclaimed land. Five years on, Gardens by the Bay has grown to become a world-renowned attraction that is also embraced by Singaporeans as a garden to call their own," Gardens by the Bay said.
